Japan to withdraw air defense force from Iraq

TOKYO, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada announced on Friday the withdrawal of the Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) in Iraq by the end of the year, marking a full end to the ASDF's mission in Iraq that began almost five years ago.

The decision was made by Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and Cabinet ministers concerned at a meeting of the national security council in the morning.

The government cited improvements in the political and security situation in Iraq, as well as the expiration at the end of the year of a U.N. resolution authorizing the current deployment of multinational forces in the country as reasons for withdrawal.

The ASDF continued its airlift mission in Iraq, even after Ground Self-Defense Force troops were withdrawn from the country in 2006.

The ASDF began airlifting activities in Iraq in March 2004. Deploying around 200 personnel, the ASDF has operated mainly from an airbase in Kuwait, using three C-130 transport planes.

The ASDF is currently airlifting troops and materials for the U.S.-led multinational forces as well as for the United Nations to three airports in Iraq, including the country's capital, Baghdad.

As of Nov. 26, the ASDF had transported around 671 tons of materials in 810 separate airlifts.

Japan announced in mid-September that it would begin mulling complete withdrawal by the end of the year.

The ASDF will dispatch about 70 personnel to form a 130-personwithdrawal work unit in Kuwait. The airlift mission itself is expected to end in mid-December, Kyodo said.

Britain to withdraw remaining troops from Iraq by March

LONDON, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Britain's six-year occupation of south Iraq will begin drawing to a close in March and the last troops will leave Basra by June, according to a report of the Guardian on Wednesday.

The paper quoted a senior defence source as saying that instead of handing over to Iraqi authorities, the British will be replaced at their Basra airport base by a large force of U.S. troops, who will set up their own headquarters there.

The withdrawal follows months of planning and security assessments by British and American commanders, the report said. The timetable is expected to be confirmed by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown early in the new year.

The initial rundown will be relatively modest, with the tempo increasing later, the defence officials said. "It will be very gradual, and them a fairly steep reduction," one said.

By the end of June almost all the 4,000 British troops now stationed at Basra will be gone, the paper reported. About 300 will remain at the request of the Iraqis to help set up colleges for officer cadets and senior staff officers, and to train the Iraqi navy.

Equipment, from the tanks to tents, will be "tailored down", officials said, indicating a gradual rundown. Most of it will be transported back to Britain.

Iraqis wish for better security, economy in Eid al-Adha festival

by Ghassan Awad

BAGHDAD, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of Iraqi Muslims filled mosques across the country at dawn Monday to start celebrating the four-day Eid al-Adha festival or feast of sacrifice, expressing strong desire for better security and solid economy.

The festival annually falls on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja of the lunar Islamic Calendar, which is a religious ritual celebrated by Muslims worldwide in commemoration of the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to mighty God.

In one of mixed neighborhoods in southwestern Baghdad, about 500 Sunni worshippers at sunrise converged on the al-Rahman mosquein the Baya'a neighborhood.

They prayed Eid al-Adha morning prayers together as Iraqi police stood guarding the mosque in which its Imam Tawfeeq al-Janabi delivered a speech, calling on all Iraqis to "be unified byloving and helping each other."

"We are so happy that we can gather again to perform prayers in our neighborhood as we were not able to do so in the past," 47-year-old Abu Umar told Xinhua after performing Eid al-Adha morning prayers in the neighborhood.

Baya'a was the scene of fierce clashes which erupted in February and ended in July 2007 between Sunni fighters and Shiite militia, which forced many Sunni families of the sectarian mixed neighborhood to leave their homes.

"It was terrible months last year when we were displaced from our houses. I still remembered that my family and I spent the worse period of our lives during the clashes and displacement. At that time our neighborhood was dark (no electricity) and scared just like a ghost city in which we were suffering from fear and hunger," Abu Umar said.

"However, I am glad that I came back to my own house and there will be no sectarian violence any more," he said, adding "we pray to God that we (Iraqis) will keep living peacefully without differences between Sunnis and Shiites in such a nice atmosphere with solid security all over the country."

He expressed his hope that the Iraqis will never hear again the sound of explosions.

Below is some statistical information retrieved from the Central Bank of Iraq website located here --> http://cbi.iq/index2.htm

Statistics

The Department of Research and Statistics was always the one to publish statistical information about various Iraqi economic activities. This put key information into the hands of researchers and economists for analysis and economic studies, to say nothing of the importance of formulating national monetary and fiscal policy, with benefit of the quarterly bulletins and the annual reports which the Central Bank of Iraq issued. However, the negative conditions that the country experienced and the harsh constraints on publishing any information that were imposed by the previous regime caused the Central Bank to halt publishing any information, thereby reducing its statistical and research activitie At present, with the end of those circumstances and with the desire of the Central Bank to have full transparency in publication, the environment has become conducive to the Central Bank’s conducting research and publishing relevant information in a timely manner. On this occasion, the Department of Research and Statistics is pleased to publish this Special Issue of the Statistical Bulletin of the Central Bank of Iraq, to provide information available for the period of 1991 through June 2003. This is the starting point for regular publication of the Quarterly Bulletin and the Annual Report of the economy of the new Iraq.

Getting Tired...

It has been almost 6 years since I started to invest in Iraq. Back when the war started, I was a middle school teacher. I started to do some research on how I can help with the troops... I cam across a site a while back which put me into contact with some of the troops over in Iraq, which had no families or anyone who they felt cared about them. I started emailing letters back and forth. I met some real nice troops. I would send them some gifts from the US. They would send me Iraqi Dinar. I thought it was a joke, but all the troops I spoke with said to hold on to the money... it would be a LOOOONG term investment.

After that I started looking into this new currency and started to buy up as much as I could, thinking... whats the worst that could happen??? The paper would never be worth anything...

Well, 7 years after the war started I am now sitting on a few million Iraqi Dinar. Family and friends used to laugh at the thought of "wasting my money", but I felt different. Over the years the Iraqi Dinar has been appreciating slooooow, but still steady. I have already doubled my investment. I started to get phone calls from friends and relatives when the Baghdad Stock Exchange made the front page of the NY Post.

I am still hanging in there for the long haul. I am not giving up... I just wish that if and when Iraq goes international, that they are or become a stable nation. I would hate for the US to have sacrificed all those lives for nothing...

I am just getting tired... seems like the world is just going to crap.
